Ix translates from the language of Betelgeuse V as "boy who is not able to satisfactorily explain what a Hrung is, nor why it should choose to collapse on Betelgeuse VII". It was applied to Ford Prefect as a nickname by his schoolmates, and he was in fact the first person in history to whom it had been applicable.
