K. Edgar Singer, a.k.a. Ed and later Zongo, is a former C.O.V.N.E.T. agent intent on discovering and neutralizing alien activities and extraterrestrial threats on Earth in the late 20th century.

While working for C.O.V.N.E.T., Singer tried to cultivate a serious demeanor because he hated when people laughed at him. Unfortunately, he was thought of as a lunatic by his superior, General Luft, who refused to believe in the scarce evidence that Singer presented as proof of his idea that aliens were planning an invasion.

Singer did manage to capture an alien, the Great Gonzo. After Gonzo's friends rescued him from C.O.V.N.E.T.'s installations before Luft could see him, Singer was reluctantly informed by his assistant Rentro that Gonzo's alien relatives were going to land on Cape Doom that night: an information that Rentro had overheard earlier while Gonzo was being contacted by a sandwich.

Unfortunately for Singer, his car had been apprehended due to unpaid tickets and he was forced to use the company's vehicle: a slow cement truck (fitting, as C.O.V.N.E.T. is disguised as a cement factory). He arrived on Cape Doom late, but was still in time to threaten the aliens with his really large gun. However, the weapon had been unloaded by Rentro. Singer's hysterical reaction to this provoked laughter from the aliens, who believed they were watching some kind of comedic act and that Singer was a friend of Gonzo.

Since it turns out their species values comedy and performance to ceremonial levels, the aliens showed great esteem and reverence for Singer, which caught him off guard. They then offered him a position as their official ambassador from Earth on their homeworld, which Singer accepted, eager at the chance to "boldly go where no one has gone before", as he put it. He was also offered a cape and a new name, Zongo, and departed with the aliens in their spaceship.
